The City of Deerfield Beach and the Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services received the highest public protection classification from the Insurance Services Office (ISO), rated as Class 1, on April 28, 2014.
Sheriff Scott Israel will deliver the news to city leaders Tuesday night at the regular commission meeting. “Attaining an ISO Class 1 rating is a direct result of the city’s commitment to their residents and the world-class fire rescue service we are proud to deliver in partnership,” Sheriff Israel said.
Deerfield Beach becomes the fourth city in Broward to achieve ISO Class 1 status and the 10th statewide. Of the nation’s 48,000 fire departments rated by ISO, only 61 earned the top ranking. “This is a great accomplishment that demonstrates that our focus on fire suppression, training, superior water supply and community risk reduction have paid off,” Fire Chief Tony Stravino said. It also shows how a well-forged partnership should work. Various city and BSO departments/divisions were involved in the rating process including Deerfield Beach’s Public Works and Information Technology and BSO’s Communications Division. “What we have is a great accomplishment for the city and the entire community,” Deerfield Beach City Manager Burgess Hanson said. “We have a great team in place in our city and it becomes more evident each and every day.”

“The Class 1 ranking reflects the city’s physical ability to fight fires,” Chief Stravino said. “As the individual who oversees the city’s ISO rating process, I can tell you the process is painstaking and comprehensive.” ISO inspectors conduct thorough site visits, interviews and extensive data review in performing their assessment. “They review every aspect of our operation and relevant city infrastructure as it relates to the process with a fine-tooth comb.” Out of a possible 105.5 points, Deerfield Beach scored 101.12 – at the very top of the scoring spectrum. A direct benefit of superior property fire protection with a Class 1 rating is the additional reduction in fire insurance premiums, especially for businesses and commercial entities.
