Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff's Office robbery detectives, in conjunction with the FBI, have arrested Nicolas Iacono, aka the “Bucs Fan Bandit,” in connection with three armed bank robberies.

Iacono first hit a Lauderdale-By-The-Sea bank on Monday, September 9th, 2002. Wearing a Tampa Bay Buccaneers football cap and large sunglass, the habitual offender with convictions in Washington, Utah and Florida, used a robbery note to make off with an undisclosed amount of cash from the SunTrust Bank, located at 221 East Commercial Blvd.

On Friday, September 13, 2002, Iacono hit again. This time, the more brazen “Bucs Fan Bandit” threatened several people with a silver handgun during a hold up at the Natbank branch at 990 N. Federal Highway in Pompano Beach. No shots were fired, but Iacono again got away with an undisclosed amount of money.

On September 18, 2002, Iacono committed his third and final bank robbery in Broward County when he paid a second visit to the same Natbank branch he hit on Friday, September 13th. Shortly after 4 p.m., he passed a teller a note demanding money. Again, he fled in his white pick-up truck with an undisclosed amount of cash. Fortunately, witnesses were able to provide a vehicle description. Moments later, a vigilant BSO District 11 deputy spotted Iacono’s truck parked outside the Chit Chat Lounge just a few blocks away from the bank. Iacono was gone, but he left his i.d. inside the vehicle.

Later that evening, through further investigation and witness interviews, BSO robbery detectives located and arrested Iacono at an apartment at 1225 S. Flagler Street in Pompano. Some of the stolen cash was also recovered. The bank robber was taken to BSO District 11 headquarters where he was interviewed. Iacono later confessed to all three robberies. Iacono is being held without bond at BSO’s Main Jail and is charged with one count of armed robbery.
