Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff's Office Traffic Homicide detectives have identified a pedestrian killed early Thursday in a hit-and-run accident in Lauderdale Lakes.

While the victim’s name is now known, detectives still want to identify the hit-and-run driver and are asking for help from the public. BSO District 4 deputies were dispatched to the 4300 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard at about 3:30 a.m. (10/11/01) after a passerby noticed a motionless body lying near a bus stop. Arriving deputies and paramedics determined that the man was dead. An examination by the medical examiner later confirmed that Jose Echeverria, 64, died of injuries sustained when he was struck by a motor vehicle.

Echeverria was reported missing by his wife at about 11 p.m. Thursday. He had left their Lauderdale Lakes home to walk to a convenience store and never returned.

BSO THI detectives have yet to find any witnesses to the fatal incident. Metallic silver car parts were recovered from the scene, indicating that the hit-and-run vehicle might have been silver in color.

Anyone with any information on the hit-and-run driver is urged to call the Broward Sheriff's Office at 765-4321 or CrimeStoppers, anonymously, at 493-TIPS.
