Deputy Michael Metroka

October 29, 1958 - December 15, 1997

Deputy Michael Metroka joined the Broward Sheriff's Office as a detention deputy in 1987 after earning his degree in Criminal Justice. Three years later, he was transferred to road patrol and in 1996 became a K-9 deputy.

While on duty on November 29, 1997, Deputy Metroka was struck in his vehicle by a hit-and-run driver near Pompano Beach. His canine partner Woedon was with him when the crash occurred. The dog survived the impact and remained at Deputy Metroka's side until he could be extracted from the wreckage. Deputy Metroka succumbed to his injuries on December 15, 1997.
