Deputy James Hillberry

March 10, 1934 - December 4, 1964

Deputy James Hillberry was killed in the line of duty during a traffic stop on December 4, 1964. During the stop, a scuffle ensued and Deputy Hillberry was fatally wounded when the suspect managed to gain control of his weapon. Deputy Hillberry was shot once in the chest.

Known to his friends at BSO as "Jimmy," Deputy Hillberry served as a field training officer at a time when most law enforcement officers received their training through on the job experience. He was described as an energetic and dedicated law enforcement officer.

Deputy Hillberry was laid to rest in Broward County's Forest Lawn Cemetery, across the street from BSO's headquarters.
