Deputy Michael Doane
December 10, 1973 - December 24, 1999
Broward Sheriff's Deputy Michael Doane, 26, died on Christmas Eve 1999 as a result of the critical injuries he suffered responding to the scene of a nightclub shooting in Lauderdale Lakes.
Early on December 12, 1999, a gunman opened fire inside the Someplace Else Café & Lounge, 2536 N. State Road 7, wounding two. BSO Deputy Alcibiades "Al" Hibbert, who had been working a security detail outside, was shot when he confronted the gunman, Kyan Bucknor, just south of the club.
Deputy Doane, on routine patrol nearby, raced to the scene to help search for Bucknor who had fled. Deputy Doane was driving north on State Road 7 near Northwest 19th Street when he swerved to avoid a car. He collided head-on with two parked vehicles at a Shell gas station, and was rushed to Broward General Medical Center with severe head and internal injuries. Despite the trauma team's non-stop efforts to save his life, Deputy Doane never recovered.
Michael Christopher Doane was born in New York City on December 10, 1973. He graduated from Countryside High School in Clearwater, Florida in 1992 and attended St. Petersburg Junior College and Polk County Community College in Winter Haven. A career in law enforcement was an early ambition for Michael - he served as a police aide for the Clearwater Police Department from 1992 to 1994, then joined the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office as a reserve deputy. After earning his law enforcement certification, he joined the Polk County Sheriff's Office in 1995, working in road patrol and the gang unit.
Deputy Doane was hired by the Broward Sheriff's Office on October 12, 1998.
