The Broward Sheriff's Office has provided law enforcement, fire rescue and code-compliance services for Cooper City, home to more than 29,000 residents in southwestern Broward County, since the city's police and fire rescue departments merged with BSO in February 2004. A predominantly residential community of 7.5 square miles, Cooper City has long-prided itself on its commitment to maintaining a beautiful, growth-managed city, reflected by its motto: Someplace Special.
BSO's Cooper City district has an annual law enforcement operating budget of approximately $8.2 million providing for 75 positions including a district captain, one commander, one lieutenant, eight sergeants, 45 deputies and other positions including community service aides and a crime scene investigation aide.
Two BSO K-9 teams and a Selective Enforcement Team (SET) operate from the district office, and a number of community-oriented programs are offered to Cooper City residents including SALT (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together), C.O.P.S. (Citizens Observer Patrol), and RAD Kids which teaches youngsters basic techniques of self-defense in situations which could lead to abuse or molestation.

Captain Robert Cates is a 24 year law enforcement veteran. He started his career in 1989 with the Cooper City Police Department. In 1994, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant and was responsible for supervising various divisions. In 2004, after Cooper City merged with the Broward Sheriff’s Office, he was assigned to the Criminal Investigations Unit.
