Port Everglades' jurisdiction encompasses a total of 2,190 acres and is composed of land within 3 municipalities (Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale and Dania Beach) and unincorporated Broward County. It is the 3rd busiest cruise port worldwide; serving 12 cruise lines, 41 cruise ships and approximately 3.6 million passengers yearly. Port Everglades is also one of Florida's leading container ports with more than 4,000 ships calls annually. The Port serves as South Florida's main seaport for receiving and distributing petroleum products to residents of 12 local counties.

Since 1991, BSO has provided law enforcement services for Port Everglades. By utilizing the agency's specialized resources, such as the Harbor Patrol, Investigations Unit, Bomb Detection and K-9 Unit, it has enabled BSO to provide full service to the visitors and businesses that travel into or conduct commerce at the Port. Acting as the Port's Facility Security Officer, the Broward Sheriff's Office manages the Security Operations Center and the Port Identification Office which issues and monitors over 22,000 permanent ID Cards and 15,000 temporary cards yearly.
