Originally established as the City of Floranada in the mid-1920's, the city was reorganized and reincorporated as Oakland Park in 1929 when the population totaled 500. Approximately 9 square miles, Oakland Park is located immediately west of US-1 and extends south to the north fork of the Middle River and borders Cypress Creek Road to the north. Western boundaries extend to NW 31 Avenue in the farthest western section.

The district has an annual operating budget of approximately $10 million and provides for 95 positions including a district chief, two lieutenants, seven sergeants, 75 deputies and administrative personel.

Employee of the Year

In late March, a committee of Oakland Park District personnel convened to review a field of candidates who were to be considered as the BSO Oakland Park District Employee of the Year for 2007. After careful consideration, as there are 95 people who work within the Oakland Park District, the committee came to a consensus and selected Deputy Raymond Suarez.

Deputy Suarez, who has served Oakland Park since 2003, was recognized by his peers for exhibiting the highest levels of professionalism, diplomacy, and commitment to citizens living, working and visiting the City of Oakland Park. It was also recognized that among his most valuable attributes is his enthusiasm to enhance the quality of life in our community on a daily basis - not some of the time, but all of the time. Deputy Suarez is the epitome of the Broward Sheriff's Office Credo: "Pride in Service with Integrity" as well as a major contributor in fulfilling the Oakland Park Strategic Performance Area "Protecting Neighborhood Safety and Integrity."

Performance Excellence Award

Provided is a photo of members of the Oakland Park District who were nominated for various City of Oakland Park awards for their work during 2008. After review by a committee of City employees, The City of Oakland Park has recognized Sgt. Richard LaCerra as the recipient of the Performance Excellence Award. 12 City employees (4 of who are BSO Oakland Park District personnel) were nominated.

The Performance Excellence Award is the highest award category for the City of Oakland Park. As BSO/Oakland Park District is the contractual police service provider for the City of Oakland Park, being recognized as the recipient of this prestigious award is something that we take great pride in.
