The Sheriff's Foundation of Broward County
The Sheriff's Foundation of Broward County was created in 1999 to promote public safety through education, public awareness, and charitable activities outside the scope of law enforcement. Funded through private donations, part of this mission includes providing moral and financial support to families of those who lost their lives in the line of duty. The Foundation also funds community programs of the Broward Sheriff's Office that aim to support the public's safety and improve the quality of life for all citizens of Broward County.
Special funds and projects supported by the Sheriff's Foundation:
The Fallen Heroes Fund
This fund provides humanitarian assistance to the families and loved ones when a deputy or fire-rescue officer dies in the line of duty. In the event of such tragedy, this fund is designed as a quick response mechanism to help the families with memorial arrangements. Providing for such needs is determined in part with the advice of the Chaplain of BSO.
Following the death of Deputy Todd Fatta, the Memorial Fund was established to support future memorial events honoring fallen heroes and functions involving the surviving family.
Deputy Christopher Schaub Memorial Scholarship Fund
This fund was created in memory of Deputy Christopher Schaub, who was killed in the line of duty on September 26, 2012. This memorial scholarship provides assistance for school expenses to the surviving children of BSO deputies and fire rescue personnel lost in the line of duty. The secondary use is to provide additional humanitarian aid to the families and loved ones if the Fallen Heroes Fund does not provide enough assistance during memorial arrangements.
Found and Forgotten
Monies donated to BSO Found and Forgotten Fund will go towards assisting investigators to use modern forensic methods to identify victims of crimes and solve cold cases. This will also assist in finding suspects and give answers to the families of the victims. Funds will be used to, but not be limited to, exhume unidentified bodies in order to perform modern forensic techniques including 3-D imaging, DNA sampling amplifying and profiling, forensic anthropology and other laboratory expenses.
Donations will support BSO K-9 essential needs, such as but not limited to K-9 vests, medical needs, training, facility maintenance, and purchase of BSO K-9 dogs.
Disaster Relief Fund
These donations provide aid to the public safety offices in counties that have suffered national disasters. The fund also aids BSO employees who are the victims of local disasters. Disbursements are made in accordance with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations.
Anti-Bullying Prevention and Education
This educational program addresses the issues middle and high school students face when being singled out and bullied. The funds, donated primarily by the Peck Foundation, provide prevention workshops, training, and strategies through dissemination and education. These funds can be used in conjunction with other programs currently promoted in the Broward County Public School District, such as the Act Now Program from the Wisconsin Children's Health Education Center.
The Sheriff's Foundation General Fund
The General Fund of the Foundation helps support a wide range of community relations, community education, and new service programs in partnership with the Broward Sheriff's Office.
