A Message from Sheriff Scott Israel
ACCREDITATION ACCOLADES – BSO MEETS THE GOLD STANDARD OF SERVICE
As Sheriff of Broward County, I am responsible for the 5,700 employees who provide vital services to the 1.7 millions residents of Broward County. Our agency prides itself on remaining on the cutting edge of technology while pursuing professional excellence.
In the public safety field, accreditation is a very important tool used to measure performance, competency and credibility. It allows us to systematically examine our framework, improve upon our performance and increase community confidence in the agency. Accreditation is the benchmark for public safety in the 21st century. There are many national and statewide accreditations the Broward Sheriff’s Office has obtained, they include:
- Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA)
- Commission on Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA)
- American Corrections Association (ACA)
- American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors (ASCLD)
- Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF)
- National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC)
- Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission (FCAC)
- National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch (NAEMD)
- National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (Blue Seal Award)
I am proud to announce that after many months of preparation and assessment, the Broward Sheriff's Office can add two more prestigious accreditations to our list.
In July, our communications division received Public Safety Communications Accreditation from CALEA, making our agency one of only 63 dispatch centers nationwide to hold such accreditation. This accreditation program was developed with participation and the technical support of the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials International, Inc. (APCO). These accreditation standards cover several topic areas: organization; direction and supervision; human resources; recruitment, selection and promotion; training; operations; and critical incidents, special operations and homeland security.
In August, our fire rescue division was awarded by the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS). This makes Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue the largest fully-accredited fire department in the nation and signifies that our service has met the “gold standard” determined by the ambulance industry. The standards from CAAS exceed those established by state and local regulation and are designed to increase operational efficiency and decrease risk and liability.
I am very proud of the men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office who have proved that we are the leading public safety agency in the nation. Our certifications, awards and accreditations were obtained through hard work and determination.
