Description of Incident:

When your business advertises free services, you’re bound to get some attention. And when that service is provided illegally, you’re bound to land in jail.

Broward Sheriff’s Office Lauderdale Lakes detectives, working with Comcast representatives, obtained information about a vendor at the Swap Shop with an easy sales pitch: Buy my cable modem and you’ll “never have to pay for cable again.” The pitch drew the attention of Comcast investigators who bought one of the devices from the eager salesman, 28-year-old Douglas Walker, on March 12.

After testing the cable modem and confirming the device received Comcast’s services unlawfully, detectives conducted a week-long undercover operation, where they visited Walker’s house and made additional purchases. In plain view, detectives saw several Comcast modems, cable boxes and other equipment being used to steal Comcast’s services.

On March 20, BSO detectives obtained a search warrant and seized about $13,000 worth of stolen equipment. Walker was arrested on charges of dealing in stolen property, sale of unauthorized equipment, unlawful receipt of cable services, possessing 50 or more communication devices and grand theft.

Further investigation of Walker’s dealings led detectives to his source: An employee at a company that distributed Comcast equipment. Forty-year-old Marlon Mosley admitted to his participation in the crime and was arrested on charges of dealing in stolen property and grand theft on March 21.

***MEDIA NOTE: The $13,000 worth of equipment recovered will be on display, along with Walker’s advertising material, today at 11 a.m. at the BSO Public Safety Building, 2601 W. Broward Blvd. Detectives will also be on hand to answer any questions.
