Description of Incident:
A 10th grader from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School was charged by Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives with discharging a destructive device after he placed an acid bomb in a crowded school area Tuesday morning.
As dozens of students walked through the covered breezeway near the front of Stoneman Douglas High School, there was an explosion, and reports of several students sprayed with liquid from the blast.
The BSO school resource deputy instantly responded and notified the BSO communications center. Deputies from Parkland, the BSO Bomb Squad and Coral Springs Fire Department also responded. The school was placed on lockdown for approximately one and a half hours while the bomb squad, using bomb detection dogs searched the entire campus. No other destructive devices were found.
Fire Rescue treated nine students complaining of skin irritation, mainly to arms and legs, but no one was transported.
BSO detectives interviewed witnesses and reviewed surveillance video from the school. Information was developed that led detectives to the suspect, 15 year-old Alexander Irvine, who admitted that he acted alone and placed the acid bomb in the crowded breezeway.
Irvine also admitted that he detonated several acid bombs in a Parkland field over the past weekend. There were no injuries in that case, and there are no other suspects linked to either incident. Irvine will face additional felony charges with the weekend incident. The suspect was transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center in Ft. Lauderdale.
