Description of Incident:
Good police work on behalf of an extremely vigilant Cooper City Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy has led to the arrest of a serial burglar with an extensive rap sheet. BSO investigators say, 49-year-old Ricky David Barrett is suspected of being behind at least three burglaries committed this week alone at businesses located within a tri-city area in southwest Broward County.
Shortly before 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 2nd, BSO Cooper City deputy Geoffrey Brown, upon his own initiative, decided to drive by the Farm Stores, located at 9128 Griffin Road. The three-year BSO veteran thought it to be a good idea given the store was burglarized on Monday and Cooper City deputies had initiated an extremely active search for the culprit.
Upon his arrival, Deputy Brown spotted a large Budget Rental truck exiting the parking lot and decided to follow it. BSO had just received intelligence that a panel truck may have been involved in Monday’s heist and may also be connected to three other burglaries that had just occurred, one at a Miramar Subway shop, a second at a Pembroke Pines paint store and a third at a Davie pizza restaurant.
Within minutes, an audible alarm was reported at the Farm Stores and arriving deputies soon radioed-in that the shop had indeed just been burglarized. Knowing the culprit was likely right in front of him, Deputy Brown continued to follow the truck after confirming it was reported stolen out of Fort Lauderdale.
For the next 45-minutes, BSO, along with other Broward County law enforcement agencies, slowly followed Barrett throughout the county at speeds that did not exceed 45 mph. Several attempts to stop the truck by using tire-deflation stop sticks were made. A final attempt was successful. Although Barrett rode on the vehicle’s rims for a distance, the truck finally came to a stop at the intersection of Okeechobee Road and Le Jeune where Hialeah Police officers were waiting. The career criminal struck an officer as he was taken out of the truck prompting them to taser him. Barrett was medically cleared and later transported to Hialeah Police headquarters.
Hialeah PD has charged Barrett with battery on an officer and resisting arrest with violence. He also faces a slew of charges in Broward County, among them: several counts for burglary, one count for possession of a stolen vehicle, one for reckless driving and for driving with a suspended license. Barrett also has two active BSO warrants for grand theft and burglary.
Barrett’s criminal record dates back to the 1980s with numerous felony arrests for drug possession, burglary and grand theft, among other charges.
