(January 24, 2008) Each year in Florida, over one hundred thousand people become the victims of domestic violence. In 2006, over 115,000 cases of domestic violence were reported to authorities. Also in 2006, 164 people were killed in domestic violence-related homicides.

Nearly half of the women whose situation was desperate enough to seek out a battered women’s shelter NEVER CALLED LAW ENFORCEMENT FOR HELP.

As a result of these alarming statistics, the Broward Sheriff’s Office has joined forces with Broward County’s Women In Distress to raise awareness and provide victims with the information they need to seek help.

As part of Sheriff Al Lamberti’s Project PSA: Protecting and Serving Through Awareness campaign, BSO and Women In Distress have created a joint video to be broadcast throughout South Florida.

The thirty second video is being released to the public and can be downloaded from the Broward Sheriff’s Office website at www.sheriff.org. The video contains important safety information intended to help individuals who find themselves victims of domestic abuse.

“We need to do everything we can to break the silence of domestic abuse and give victims the information they need to escape their abusers,” said Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti. “Victims need to know that there is help available. All they need to do is call 9-1-1, or call an abuse hotline operated by groups like Women in Distress.”

Project P.S.A. releases a new safety message each month intended to protect and inform individuals of important safety information. Each month, the videos are distributed to local media who is encouraged to share these short messages with their audience.

Members of the public as well as media can view the videos and download them from the Broward Sheriff’s Office website: www.sheriff.org.
