Lieutenant Catherine Cummings began her career with the Broward Sheriff’s Office August 4, 1997, as a Cadet in the 129th Corrections Academy at the Broward Community College. Upon graduation, she was promoted to a Deputy Sheriff in November 1997. As a deputy she was assigned to the North Broward Bureau and the Joseph V. Conte Facility, working with adults, juveniles, and mentally ill inmates, in both traditional and direct supervision settings. Lieutenant Cummings was cross-certified as a law enforcement officer in 1999. In 2003, she was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was assigned to the Stockade Facility and in June of that year she was assigned to Professional Compliance (presently, Division of Internal Affairs) as a Detective Sergeant. She was promoted to lieutenant in 2006 and was assigned as the shift commander at the Main Jail Bureau, Joseph V. Conte Facility, Central Intake Bureau and back to the Main Jail Bureau where she was assigned as the Executive Officer in 2015.  Lieutenant Cummings is a graduate of the Nova Southeastern University Executive Leadership Program, the Southern Police Institute University of Louisville Command Officers Development Course and the National Jail Leadership Command Academy at the Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. She has also been certified as a Florida Model Jail Inspector.
