Description of Incident:
A 4-year-old girl died after a two-car collision Tuesday night near Fort Lauderdale sent the vehicle she was travelling in careening into a concrete utility pole.
The crash happened around 8:50 p.m. at the intersection of Northwest 12th Street and Northwest 31st Avenue.
Initially, the Volkswagen Jetta was traveling southbound on Northwest 31st Avenue but stopped at the intersection of Northwest 12th Street to make a U-turn. An unknown vehicle, followed by a Nissan Pathfinder, was heading northbound approaching the intersection as the Jetta began to make the U-turn directly in their path.
The first northbound vehicle managed to make a sharp right turn, causing it to travel over the sidewalk, through a chain-lined fence and into a vacant lot. The driver then drove through a church parking lot, returned to the roadway and drove off.
The driver of the Pathfinder, who was directly behind the unknown vehicle, was unable to avoid the collision. The front of the SUV broadsided the passenger side of the Jetta. The Jetta was redirected in a northeast direction and came to rest on the sidewalk along the east side of the street after colliding into a concrete utility pole. The Pathfinder continued northbound, crossed over the median and came to rest in the parking lot of the shopping plaza along the west side of the street.
Fire Rescue personnel transported all the occupants of the Jetta to Broward Health Medical Center in critical condition. Four-year-old Majesty Folson was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the Pathfinder remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation.
The preliminary review of the scene determined no one in the Jetta was wearing seat belts. No child restraint seat was located either.
The investigation is ongoing.
