Shop with the Sheriff
9:30 – 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017
Walmart, 2500 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale
This Christmas will be one to remember for 100 Broward County students who will join Broward Sheriff Scott Israel on Tuesday for Shop with the Sheriff.
It'll be the Russian doll of shopping experiences for the deserving students. Before they grab their shopping carts and race down the aisles, the children will be greeted by the Miami Heat Xtreme Team and the basketball team's mascot, Burnie. Among the other surprises in store for the students are $150 to spend on gifts for themselves, a personal hygiene kit and a tablet.
"It's really important to me that the children of Broward County know they are valued and that they are loved," Israel said. "The Shop with the Sheriff event is just one way the Broward Sheriff's Office family shows our commitment to serving the people in our communities. It's one of my favorite events, and its success is in great part due to the generosity of our community partners such as the Sheriff's Foundation of Broward County."
This year, the young shoppers will have $50 more to spend thanks to the Sheriff's Foundation. Last year, the students were given $100. They'll also get the gift of a personal hygiene package so that they don't have to worry about using their gift card to buy essentials. The 100 tablets are a present from the Broward Sheriff's Advisory Council.
BSO school resource deputies coordinate Shop with the Sheriff and have done so for nearly 20 years. They invite students from the public safety agency's districts who meet several criteria, including behaving well and having a financial need. The student shoppers will be paired with volunteers from all corners of BSO, including sworn and civilian staff, members of the Sheriff's Foundation and the advisory council.
MEDIA NOTE:Media covering the Shop with the Sheriff event should meet at 9:15 a.m. Dec. 19 at Walmart, 2500 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale.
