MAN LOSES CONTROL OF SCOOTER  IN FATAL CRASH

Driver No. 1: James Riina, 55, male, 10/13/62, 20 W. Cambridge St., Valhalla, NY (DECEASED)

Driver No. 2: G. Con Keller, 78, male, Hillsboro Beach 

Description of Incident:

A man who lost control of a motor scooter was fatally struck Thursday night in Pompano Beach. Broward Sheriff's Office traffic homicide detectives are investigating the two-vehicle crash.

Around 6:10 p.m. May 3, James Riina was on a 2006 Piaggio navigating a curve near the 2000 block of North Ocean Boulevard when he fell off the scooter. Riina slid from the northbound lanes into the southbound lanes and struck the driver's side of a 2009 Toyota Venza.  

BSO deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded to the scene. Riina was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver remained at the scene.

Detectives with the Traffic Homicide Investigation unit don't believe the Toyota driver's actions contributed to the crash.
