Description of Incident:

On Thursday night, a man barbecuing was fatally shot following a verbal altercation in Pompano Beach. Broward Sheriff's Office homicide detectives are investigating the murder of 46-year-old Trevor Mitchell by Donel Bostick.

Around 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26, BSO deputies responded to a report of shots fired at 220 N.W. 15th Place. The suspect, Bostick, had a verbal altercation with Mitchell just before he killed Mitchell. Bostick fled south on I-95 and crashed near the Davie Boulevard exit. Initially, he refused to leave the vehicle and fired a shot before he was taken into custody. BSO detectives don't believe Bostick was aiming at law enforcement officers. Detectives say Bostick and Mitchell grew up together, and Bostick's motive remains unclear.

Responding to the Pompano Beach scene were Pompano Beach Fire Rescue, who pronounced Mitchell dead, and BSO's Crime Scene and Homicide units. Fort Lauderdale Police Department and Florida Highway Patrol assisted BSO at the secondary scene where Bostick was detained.

The homicide investigation continues.
