BSO Case Number: 10-1805-002547
Jurisdiction: Deerfield Beach
Place of Occurrence: Northeast Third Avenue at Northeast 44th Street, Deerfield Beach
Driver No. 1: Leonardo Littlejohn, 29, male, 12/10/88, 284 N.E. 43rd St., Deerfield Beach (DECEASED)
Driver No. 2: Deputy Gordon Black, 46, male, nine-year veteran with Broward Sheriff's Office
Broward Sheriff's Office traffic homicide detectives are investigating a deputy-involved fatal crash that happened Wednesday night in Deerfield Beach.
Around 10:45 p.m. May 16, BSO Deputy Gordon Black was responding to a call for service with his emergency lights on when a car and his SUV collided. Black's marked Ford Explorer SUV was traveling west on Northeast 44th Street, approaching the intersection of Northeast Third Avenue. As the deputy began to turn north onto Northeast Third Avenue, a Hyundai Azera headed north on the same street struck the deputy's driver's side front corner. The crash caused Leonardo Littlejohn's car to rotate, travel farther north, and strike small palm trees and a wooden fence. The collision with the fence forced Littlejohn's sedan back onto the road where it rolled over onto its roof. The impact also ripped the front bumper and steel support from Black's SUV.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to the scene and transported Littlejohn to Broward Health North where he was pronounced dead. Black was taken to an area hospital where he was treated and released.
Based on the preliminary information and physical evidence, detectives believe Littlejohn's high rate of speed and his failure to heed the four-way stop are contributing factors.
