He said he needed power. That’s why Juan Rodriguez Fajardo stole an Oakland Park family’s generator five days after Hurricane Irma.
Working quickly to identify the culprit, the Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested Rodriguez Fajardo on Wednesday.
On Sept. 15, the red Briggs & Stratton generator was in a secure area of the front porch at 110 N.W. 53rd St. Its 5,500 watts were being used to provide power for the resident’s three children, two of whom have autism.
Surveillance video shows Rodriguez Fajardo drive through the neighborhood and then return to the victim’s home. He backs a white Hyundai SUV into the driveway. Moments later, he leaves with the generator.
The victim’s story was shared on Facebook, complete with video.
Powerless to escape the consequences of his theft, Rodriguez Fajardo faces charges of burglary of an occupied structure during a state emergency and grand theft of less than $5,000.
The generator has been returned to the grateful family.
