Description of Incident:
An early morning crash Thursday in Wilton Manors left a bicyclist dead. The driver responsible fled the scene, but he was tracked down and arrested thanks to a good Samaritan.
Around 7 a.m. on Dec. 21, Louis Dorsey, 64, was riding his bike westbound on the north side of East Oakland Park Boulevard. In the 500 block, he made his way south over the westbound lanes and into the median turning lane hoping to continue south over the eastbound lanes. As he moved into the far left lane of eastbound traffic, he rode into the path of an oncoming Honda Civic. Despite forcefully applying the brakes to avoid a collision, the Honda struck Dorsey and then fled the scene.
A witness to the crash called for help with a description of the vehicle. The information was quickly broadcasted to area law enforcement agencies who located the damaged, abandoned vehicle within a parking garage in the City of Fort Lauderdale near the Intracoastal Waterway. The driver had fled the area on foot but was taken into custody by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department near his residence on charges unrelated to the crash. Those charges include driving with a suspended license and possession of cocaine.
Ft. Lauderdale Fire Rescue transported Dorsey to Broward Health Medical where he was pronounced dead as a result of injuries sustained from the crash.
The investigation is ongoing.
