The Broward Sheriff's Office received a large boost to its NARCAN supply this week with a shipment of 1,200 units from the Florida Sheriffs Association (FSA). The drug, which has been credited with saving many lives across the country, gives deputies another tool to combat Broward's opioid epidemic.

"Our firefighters have administered NARCAN for years, so I recognized the importance of putting this opiate antidote in the hands of our deputies, who are often the first to arrive on scene," Sheriff Scott Israel said. "Thanks to the generous donation from the Florida Sheriffs Association, we will be able to provide this life-saving tool to more of our deputies."

BSO fire rescue personnel started training deputies this summer to administer NARCAN through a nasal spray. The Broward Sheriff's Advisory Council provided the first allotment of NARCAN kits, which was distributed throughout BSO's district offices. Deputies have been carrying the life-saving overdose drug since June.

To request a presentation about the dangers of heroin or other illicit and synthetic drugs, contact the chairman of Broward County's Community Response Team, BSO Executive Director David Scharf, at (954) 375-6180.

If you know someone struggling with opioid abuse, call Broward 2-1-1 for help.
