Description of Incident:
The man who shot and killed a woman as she drove westbound on Broward Boulevard on October 12 is now in custody.
On October 26, Broward Sheriff's Office homicide detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Damion Powell, 29. The U.S. Marshal Service Task Force took him into custody without incident that same night.
The shooting took place around 2:45 a.m. October 12. Rebecca Sama Karns, 31, was behind the wheel of her white Chevy Equinox, heading westbound in the 2900 block of Broward Boulevard when she was struck by a bullet. Her vehicle veered off the road and stopped after striking a parked vehicle near Northwest 31st Avenue and Broward Boulevard. Her passenger, a male friend, was not injured.
Investigators say Powell was involved in an altercation with Karns’ friend while they were hanging out in Ft. Lauderdale’s Himmarshee District earlier that evening. In retaliation for the fight, Powell followed Karns and her friend and fired into her vehicle, striking Karns.
Lauderhill Fire Rescue transported her to Broward Health Medical Center. She remained hospitalized until she passed away on October 13.
Powell has been booked into the BSO Main Jail facing one charge of first degree murder.
