Description of Incident:

A night out on Fort Lauderdale Beach ended tragically for an Iowa woman who was believed to be intoxicated when she arrived back at her hotel.

According to Stephen Elliot, 29, who was traveling with Kayla Cockerton, 24, and was present when the incident took place, he and Cockerton had spent the evening at a Fort Lauderdale bar.

As midnight approached, the two took a cab to their hotel located at 1441 S. Ocean Blvd. in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea.  Once they arrived, Elliot says Cockerton exited the cab.  He struggled to pay for the cab fare, but as he looked around, he spotted Cockerton lying on the driveway along the northeast corner of the hotel.

Meanwhile, a vehicle was driving through the circular driveway of the hotel when the driver felt a bump and noticed his front tire was elevated.  Hunter Turpin, 19, exited the vehicle to investigate and discovered Cockerton under the car.  Attempts to move the vehicle were unsuccessful.  Cockerton was pronounced dead at the scene.

Traffic homicide investigators say the injuries sustained by Cockerton are consistent with her lying on her stomach at the time of the incident.  They are not considering speed, driveway conditions, mechanical malfunction and weather as contributing factors in this incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
