Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives are investigating a crash that took the life of a Cleveland Clinic employee as she walked to her car after her shift. 

At approximately 5 p.m. on January 2, Francisca McKenzie was driving her 2008 Mercedes ML 350 westbound on Cleveland Clinic Boulevard. approaching the marked pedestrian crosswalk. At the same moment, Margarita Almonte was walking northbound across the crosswalk toward the hospital parking lot. 

The front bumper of McKenzie’s car struck the pedestrian in the single westbound lane within the crosswalk. Almonte was carried a short distance then fell to the pavement. McKenzie’s car traveled over Almonte. 

Medical personnel from the hospital carried Almonte to the emergency room where she was pronounced deceased at 5:51 p.m. McKenzie was not injured. She remained on scene. 

Preliminary investigation indicates excessive speed, driver impairment and mechanical malfunction were not contributory to the crash. 

The THI investigation is ongoing.
