William Cox was the Town Marshal for the City of Dania, Florida (now Dania Beach and part of BSO's jurisdiction) when he was shot and killed as he responded to a domestic dispute on August 24, 1915. Cox's assailant, Gus Fears, also killed his wife during the incident and subsequently took his own life at the scene.
Marshal Cox was born in 1883 in Montgomery County, Georgia, and became town marshal following the murder of his predecessor in 1914. Marshal Cox had no previous law enforcement experience, but was selected for the position by Dania's community leaders presumably for his reputation in the town, imposing physical stature and what was described as the "fearless discharging of his duties." Marshal Cox is interred in the historic Miami City Cemetery.
